Hon Namanya Naboth, the Rubabo Constituency legislator, has challenged Ugandans to demand accountability for the money that the government sends to local governments to improve service delivery in their areas.
Hon Naboth said this at the fundraising event for the refurbishment of Nyakabungo Playground in Nyakabungo Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District. He disclosed that corruption is not only present in top government offices but also in district and local council offices. Government funds sent to the district to support sports in schools and communities are often misused by district officials due to low demand for accountability from the community, leaving the sports sector in a dire situation.
Hon Naboth also revealed that the idleness among unemployed youths has led to increased law-breaking in communities. He challenged elderly people to also participate in sports activities, emphasizing that they are key to good health, as they help build physical fitness and fight diseases.
Reverend Akankiza Benard, the Parish Priest of Nyakabungo Parish in Nyabitete Archdeaconry under North Kigezi Diocese, has implored parents to discover and nurture their children’s talents. He added that everyone has a talent that needs to be nourished and developed. Many prominent individuals, including footballers and musicians, became successful because they discovered and honed their talents.
Rev. Akankiza also acknowledged the people who initiated the reconstruction of Nyakabungo Playground, noting that it will be a multipurpose facility for the community.
Kasiibayo Levi, the Chairperson of the organizing committee, revealed that the playground will accommodate various sports activities, including athletics, football, and volleyball. He disclosed that additional funds are still needed to complete their mission.
