Authorities in Buhweju District are currently investigating an incident involving unidentified individuals wielding machetes who assaulted and injured Buhweju County’s Member of Parliament, Francis Mwijukye.
The altercation occurred on May 12, 2024, during a Sunday service at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church in Nyakishana sub-county, within Buhweju District. Macial Tumusiime, the spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, confirmed the incident. It was reported that after the service, members of the Rwanyamabare Farmers Association approached Hon. Mwijukye, informing him about ongoing land disputes with a neighboring church.
Allegedly, there is a risk of the church being displaced by Frank Kamugisha, who claims ownership of the land in question. Tumusiime stated that after the service, Mwijukye and church members attempted to visit the disputed land, which was fenced by Kamugisha. Upon arrival, they encountered a group of individuals armed with sticks and machetes, leading to a confrontation and subsequent physical altercation. Mwijukye sustained head injuries during the altercation.
Saverino Nayebare, Mwijukye’s brother, stated that the victim was rescued by the police and taken to Nsiika Health Center IV for medical treatment before being transferred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
The land, estimated to be fifty acres, is claimed by both Frank Kamugisha and the Rwanyamabare Farmers Association.
