Police in Mbarara City are investigating a case of murder involving a one-year-and-seven-month-old baby boy at Kijungu Lodge in Central Cell, Nyamityobora Ward. The child had been staying with his mother.
According to Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Samson Kasasira, the incident occurred on January 2, 2025, at around 2:00 a.m. The child’s mother, Namara Evelyn, aged 29 and a sex worker, reportedly left her child asleep in her room to visit a bar approximately 1 km away. She returned at about 5:30 a.m. to find her son lying in a pool of blood with his neck cut.
Namara immediately raised an alarm, waking other residents, including the lodge manager, who promptly informed the police. Officers responded swiftly, visiting and examining the scene of the crime, documenting evidence, and gathering information. Two suspects were arrested to assist with the investigations.
The child’s body has been taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
SP Kasasira urged the public to take precautions when leaving their homes unattended. He emphasized the importance of locking up securely or entrusting a reliable neighbor to stay vigilant, especially during odd hours.
