Private Ronald Nimusiima, a Marine soldier attached to Rwenshama landing site on Lake Edward in Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District, drowned on Saturday morning.

Nimusiima was on duty patrolling the Kagyera border with an unidentified colleague and three other individuals traveling on a boat when they encountered suspected Congolese marine soldiers, who fired shots into the air.

The three civilians jumped off the boat and swam to shore. As the shooting continued, the marine soldiers also abandoned the boat; the unidentified soldier climbed a tree, while Ronald Nimusiima drowned.

The three survivors reported the incident to authorities at the landing site, who retrieved both the surviving soldier and Nimusiima’s body. However, the boat and its engine were taken by the suspected Congolese marine soldiers.

Bashir Hanji, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Ronald Nimusiima, attached to the Lake Edward Marine Unit.
