Ugandans have been encouraged to support and prioritize the education of their children to ensure a brighter future and the development of their communities.

This call to action was made by Counsel Isaac Atukunda, the secretary of the Uganda Law Society, during the launch of the Atukunda Education Trust Fund at the Heritage Country Club in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality. The fund aims to provide scholarships to underprivileged families with children in government primary schools in Rukungiri Municipality.

Counsel Atukunda shared that his personal history and journey to success inspired him to give back to his hometown by establishing this trust fund to support education in the municipality. He expressed his commitment to seeking additional funding to expand the initiative.

Atukunda urged parents to pray for their children and emphasized that the trust fund is non-partisan, selecting beneficiaries from various families regardless of their political affiliations. He also called on teachers to monitor the progress of these children and on parents to provide food and other essentials, as the fund covers school fees for the entire primary level, with plans to extend support to secondary and tertiary education in the future.

Counsel Atukunda assured that his initiative would continue to support underprivileged families in educating their children, irrespective of the outcomes of any elections he might contest.

Alfred Katabazi Mutuuza, the Rukungiri Municipal Education Officer, praised the initiative for its potential to enhance the education sector by assisting parents struggling to pay school fees. Parents of the selected beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to Counsel Atukunda for his support, highlighting the difficulties they faced in educating their children.

Katabazi also urged parents of the beneficiaries to nurture their children into disciplined learners to maximize this opportunity. Beneficiaries were chosen through a collaborative effort between local leaders and headteachers from all 16 primary schools in Rukungiri Municipality, with each school nominating one child who received school fees for the current term.

The launch event was attended by various headteachers, teachers, parents, and municipal and district council members, led by Rukungiri Municipality Speaker Constance Tumusiime.
