Kanungu police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified man who was lynched by a mob in the early hours of Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Katembe Cell, Nyaruto Parish, Kambuga Sub-county.

According to reports, the deceased allegedly broke into the home of Arinaitwe Asuman at around 3:20 AM by digging a hole behind the main house using a spear and a panga. Upon entering the bedroom, he reportedly attacked Asuman, stabbing him with a spear and injuring him.

Asuman raised an alarm, prompting neighbors to rush to his aid. In an attempt to escape, the intruder grabbed an axe from inside the house and tried to break through a window, but the gathered residents overpowered him. The mob then beat him severely before the area chairman alerted the police.

Officers from Kambuga Police Station, led by ASP Joka, responded to the scene and attempted to rescue the suspect. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

Police recovered exhibits, including a panga, an axe, and a spear, from the scene. The deceased’s body was taken to Kambuga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Authorities have urged anyone missing a relative to visit the mortuary for identification and a decent burial.

ASP Maate Elly, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, condemned the mob action and urged the public to refrain from acts of lawlessness, emphasizing the need to allow the justice system to take its course.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
