School administrators at Kahoko Primary School in Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have raised concerns over the poor state of the school’s toilets.

Venance Bakazaarwa, the headteacher, expressed disappointment, stating that despite writing to relevant offices, no action has been taken. Speaking during a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of a three-classroom block yesterday, Bakazaarwa highlighted the risks posed by the dilapidated toilets. He warned that some pupils might fall into the open pits, while the unbearable stench could pose health risks. He called on the authorities to intervene urgently.

Ambrose Byamukama, the area LC1 chairperson, and Silver Tumwebaze, the PTA chairperson, also appealed to the government to construct new toilets. They noted that the current facilities, accommodating 370 pupils, were built in the 1950s and are now a serious hazard. The duo warned that without immediate action, lives could be at risk.

During the same function, Nyakagyeme Sub-county Chief Pamela Kyokutamba and LC3 Chairperson Godson Mubangizi urged parents to work closely with teachers and school administrators to improve academic performance. Mubangizi commended the Rukungiri local government for its efforts in promoting education in Nyakagyeme Sub-county but emphasized the urgent need for a modern toilet facility at Kahoko Primary School.

Speaking on behalf of the district, Musimenta Claire Cledonia, who represented both the RDC and the LC5 chairperson, urged parents to take an active role in their children’s education. She emphasized the importance of providing scholastic materials and ensuring that pupils have meals to support their learning and improve academic outcomes.
