The territorial police in Rukungiri have reported a fatal road accident that claimed the life of 12-year-old Anita Akanyijuka, a pupil at Nyarurambi Child Development Center Primary School and daughter of Mrs. Tushemerirwe Jovinta of Nyarurambi Cell.
The accident occurred on February 19, 2025, at around 6:30 PM in Nyarurambi Cell, Kahoko Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub-county, along the Kisiizi-Kanungu Road in Rukungiri District. It involved a blue M/Canter truck, registration number UAT 972L, driven by Ariho Gilbert, 42, a resident of Nyarurambi Cell, Kahoko Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub-county.
According to reports, the driver was traveling from Kisiizi toward Nyakishenyi Town when he encountered a group of pupils standing by the roadside at Nyarurambi Trading Center. He allegedly lost control and hit one of the pupils, who was immediately rushed to Kisiizi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police responded to the incident, visited and documented the scene, and impounded the vehicle, which is currently parked at Rukungiri CPS pending inspection. The deceased’s body was taken to Kisiizi Mortuary for a postmortem examination, while the driver has been detained at Rukungiri CPS.
Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless driving and overspeeding were the likely causes of the accident.
