In Kisoro District, a man in his twenties was directed by the court on Wednesday to either pay Ugandan Shillings 170,000 for theft or face a sentence of 14 months and 22 days in prison.

Magistrate Grade One Dismas Muchelule presided over the case. According to the prosecution, on June 22, 2023, Dickson Byarugaba, residing in Rushekye village, Nyamiyaga ward, Nyanamo Town Council, Kisoro District, stole sheep equipment worth Ugx 170,000 from Mudodo Geoffrey, who also resides at the same location.

State prosecutor Best Kemigisha Niwagaba informed the court that the convict had been in remand for seven months. Subsequently, the convict’s family engaged in reconciliation and agreed to compensate the complainant, Geoffrey, with Ugx 170,000.

Niwagaba urged the court to impose a penalty as such incidents were increasingly common in communities.

After considering arguments from both sides, His Worship mandated the convict to either pay Ugx 170,000 or face imprisonment for 14 months and 22 days.
