The Lions Club of Rukungiri on Friday donated food items to Rukungiri ghetto youths to help them get rid of hunger, in line with their core values of selfless service, integrity, compassion, and community improvement.
Muhwezi Edson Mpirime, the past club president in Rukungiri, said that as a club they have opted to help these ghetto youths simply because they are also human beings and are not the ones who decided to live the way they do.
He said the Lions Club is responsible for carrying out charitable activities, where feeding the hungry is among them.
He therefore asserted that, as a club, they found it important to visit these people and support them with food items including yellow bananas, loaves of bread, biscuits, sodas, among others.
He added that the way these ghetto youths welcomed them really showed that they are people like others, despite the challenges they encounter.
He therefore implored the general public to refrain from segregating these people, but instead to always empower them and give them hope for the future.
Mugumya Isaac, the leader of these ghetto youths who is a resident of Omukakyeeka, Rukungiri Municipality, hailed the Lions Club of Rukungiri for remembering them, noting that the town is full of ghetto youths and ghetto children who are always struggling to get what to eat, drink, wear, and shelter.
He said the aid from the club has profoundly helped a big number of ghetto children, imploring other humanitarian clubs and well-wishers to continue helping them.
He condemned beliefs that ghetto children are bad people, killers, thieves, rapists, among others, noting that the only difference between them and others is that they are always going through challenges and live in ghettos.
