A shortage of labour and insufficient equipment have continued to delay the government’s National Identity card renewal program in some sub-counties of Ntungamo district.
The exercise, which officially began on the 27th of May, is yet to commence in several areas, despite residents eagerly awaiting the service.
While speaking to our reporter, Amanya Ivan Rwanyakibale, the LC3 Chairperson of Rugarama North Sub-county, said residents have been approaching him inquiring about the delayed program. However, he assured them that he is already in contact with the district registrar and the matter is being addressed.
Rwanyakibale also urged fellow leaders to intensify community mobilization to ensure that once the registrars are available, residents can actively participate in the exercise.
He further appealed for cooperation from both leaders and well-wishers to provide support, especially in areas lacking electricity, to enable a smooth and successful implementation of the program.
Meanwhile, Coleb Tindimwebwa, the LC3 Chairperson of Rubaare Sub-county, noted that the program has not yet reached his area either. He explained that the registrars are still stationed at the county headquarters, where a few residents go for renewals.
He attributed the delay to a shortage of both labour and essential equipment such as computers. He added that district officials have promised to resolve these issues soon.
