Kisoro Municipality has requested to partner with BIN-IT service Ltd, the country’s pioneer private waste management company in a drive to boost waste management in Kisoro Municipality.
This has been revealed by Kisoro Municipal town clerk, Kamba Haruna.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Haruna Kamba noted that Kisoro Municipality is a tourism destination town and a business hub for the two-bordering country of Rwanda and DR Congo and it faces huge amounts of solid wastes generated.
According to the report, Kisoro Municipality generates 6462 tons of garbage annually. Of 6462 tons generated, 2584 tons consist of non-biodegradable waste and approximately 646 tons end up uncollected or disposed off indiscriminately.
Kamba said that currently, the only disposable method of plastic is open burning which he said is a danger to public health.
Haruna Kamba is optimistic that Kisoro municipality will benefit from the technological program of BIN-IT services Ltd towards overcoming solid waste challenges.
He said that officials from BIN-IT services Ltd are still carrying out a feasibility study before they start supporting Kisoro municipality to boost waste management at a free cost
Mr. Kamba also said that Kisoro municipality managed to fix 8 solar street lights in the town. The contract was done by Life Uganda Ltd Company at a fee of 67 million shillings. The street lights were elected at Bugigi place and a line heading to Kisoro Hospital.
The LC4 councilor representing Nyagashinge ward, Tumwizere Michael said that the street light will help to reduce darkness in some spot areas.
He said that the municipality has plans of fixing street lights in other areas of town based on revenue collected. He thanked Kisoro municipality for rehabilitating some of the feeder roads in the municipality
Tumwizere Michael further asked residents of Nyagashinge ward to embrace the community road that is yet to be opened in the area. He said that the road will connect Chahi, Nyagashinge, and Gishegera cell
