Leaders in Kisoro district have appealed to the government to arrest cult leaders who are reportedly blocking children from participating in the ongoing yellow fever immunization exercise.

In August a national program to vaccinate the population against yellow fever was launched in Lira to ensure that people are protected against this high-threat disease.

However, leaders allege that the parents who subscribe to these religious sects were forbidden from immunizing their children.

The Speaker of the Southern division Kisoro municipality Hadijja Kabaganda says in her area there are many unregistered cults headed by unknown pastors, whom she wants to be detained by security authorities.

The Kisoro district Chairman Abel Bizimana has decried increasing cults that forbids immunization. He says that relevant authorities should apprehend all cults that are against government programs.

The Kisoro Resident District Commissioner Robert Tukamuhebwa acknowledged that the district registered low turn-up in the first vaccination phase due to these cults.

He however threatened to arrest all church leaders found de-campaigning the government program.
