The Assistant District Health Officer-in-charge of Maternal and Child Health, Paddy Mwesigye, has attributed the increasing cases of maternal and prenatal mortality in the district to the lack of ultrasound scan services at lower health facilities in the district.

Mwesigye revealed this on Tuesday morning while speaking to our reporter after the district received a donation of two scans from the Rotary Club of Entebbe with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health on Sunday.

The two scans will be given to Butanda and Buhara Health Centre IIIs. Mwesigye said that he is optimistic that the scans will help to reduce the maternal and prenatal mortality cases in the district.

In the 2022/2023 Financial Year, the District registered 249 neonatal deaths. The 249 are part of the 10,472 deliveries that the district registered.

Of the 249, 111 died in the first week after birth, 65 were stillbirths and 73 deaths occurred during the process of delivery.

In 2020, the district registered 13 cases of maternal deaths and 71 cases of prenatal deaths while in 2019, they had 10 cases of maternal mortality and 66 cases of prenatal deaths.
