The Kabale Municipal Stadium buzzed with excitement as hundreds of runners across Kigezi and beyond converged for the inaugural Kigezi Unity Run, an event blending athleticism, health, and a call for unity.

The run, spearheaded by Grace Ankunda Bekunda Bwesigye, a woman MP aspirant for Kabale District, goes beyond political ambitions, highlighting the urgent need for community wellness and youth empowerment in Kigezi.

“Through this run, we are not only calling for an end to divisive politics, but we are investing in the health and talents of our people,” said Ankunda. “We want to remind Kigezi that our strength lies in unity, not in sectarian lines.”

The event featured a free medical camp offering health check-ups and guidance, addressing the region’s rising burden of non-communicable diseases. In a passionate address, Uganda’s celebrated long-distance runner, Moses Kipsiro, the chief runner, urged locals to embrace physical activity as part of their lifestyle.

“Running is not just for athletes—it is medicine. Let’s make it a habit,” said Kipsiro, emphasizing the need for preventive health approaches.

Ankunda also noted that the Unity Run serves as a platform to identify and nurture athletic talent among youth in the region. “There is great potential in our young people. With the right support, we can raise future champions from Kigezi,” she added.
