A 22-day-old baby boy who was found abandoned in Itenga-Izinga Cell, Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri District, and had been under the care of Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale, was today officially handed over to a new family. The child will now be raised by Mr. Byamukama Jackson and his wife, Asiimwe Lillian, residents of the same Itenga-Izinga Cell.

During the handover ceremony, Rukungiri District Senior Probation Officer, Ms. Tumusimire Jennifer, expressed appreciation to all individuals who showed sympathy and support for the abandoned baby. She confirmed that the family of Mr. Byamukama Jackson and his wife was selected to raise the child after meeting the requirements for adoption.

Ms. Tumusimire also extended special thanks to the administration of Karoli Lwanga Hospital, led by the principal administrator, for caring for the baby until responsible adoptive parents were found. She further called upon sympathetic and responsible Ugandans to consider adopting other abandoned children aged four years and above who are still in need of homes.

Corporal Taremwa Moses, in charge of Child Affairs at Rukungiri District Central Police Station, told Boona Radio that the newborn baby, then just one day old, was brought to police by the Chairperson of Itenga-Izinga Cell after he found the baby abandoned in a bush. Corporal Taremwa said the child was handed over to Karoli Lwanga Hospital with support from district child welfare and health authorities, and later a Good Samaritan from the same area expressed interest in adopting the child.

He added that a thorough inspection of the home of Mr. Byamukama and his wife confirmed their ability to provide a safe and loving environment for the child.

Mr. Byamukama Jackson and his wife Asiimwe Lillian told Boona Radio they are fully committed to raising the baby with the same love and care they gave their four biological children. They promised to treat the child as their own, feed and nurture him, and guided by faith, they expressed their dream of seeing him grow up to become a minister in the country.

Agatha Kebirungi, Principal of Nurses and Midwives at Karoli Lwanga Hospital, appreciated the community for their support and prayers for the baby boy, who was brought to the hospital on 19th June 2025, weighing 3.3 kg. After consistent care, he now weighs 3.8 kg. She also thanked the Rukungiri Lions Club for sponsoring all needs, as well as the District Health Office, the Probation Office, and the Police Child Affairs unit.

She encouraged the adoptive family to continue consulting the hospital in case of any health concerns and pledged that the hospital, in partnership with Rukungiri Lions Club, would continue monitoring the baby’s growth for the next year.

Nurse Hellen Ariho, another health officer at Karoli Lwanga Hospital, also confirmed the hospital had provided all necessary care to the baby. She thanked the hospital administration and all who facilitated the baby’s safe care and wished the new family the very best in raising the child.

This marks the first recorded case of an abandoned newborn received at Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale since the start of 2025.
