In a bid to improve fish farming in Kanungu district, the district production department on Wednesday launched the distribution of fish fingerlings to youths and other interested fish farmers, a function that took place at the youth fish project in Bwizibera, Kihihi town council.
For the start, four youth groups including Rutendere Youth Development Association, Kazinga- Nyanga youth fish farmers, Nyamirama-youth Fish Farmers Group, and Nuwagaba Believe (the chairperson Kanungu youth council.) received fish fingerlings.
While presiding over the distribution, the GISO Kihihi town council Deus Karekyezi who represented the RDC Kanungu urged the youth to utilize this project that is intended to improve the socio-economic transformation of the youths.
He implored the youths to desist from corrupt tendencies and rather work hard for the development of this project.
Godwin Nkwasiibwe, the district production officer said the district has made several investments especially in the hatchery and the fish food-making machine currently stationed in Kyeijanga which he says will greatly reduce the costs of fish feeds.
He said the distribution will continue to benefit farmers every three months.
The district fisheries officer Edgar Musinguzi said the fisheries department has continued to grow and is optimistic that the efforts put in by the production department will help grow the sector.
