Police in Kanungu are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged lynching of Frank Nuwagaba, a 30-year-old man.

Nuwagaba, a casual laborer residing in Bikuto Cell, Southern Ward, Butogota Town Council, was a well-known habitual criminal. Recently released from Kanungu prison on charges of attempted murder, he had faced multiple court cases for smoking weed and posing a threat to his family and the community.

On June 15, 2024, around 19:00 hours, in Bikuto Cell, Southern Ward, Butogota Town Council, Kanungu District, Nuwagaba was reportedly beaten to death by an angry mob. This occurred after he allegedly attacked his neighbor, Tumuhebwe Mauda, a 50-year-old woman, piercing her stomach with a sharp metallic object and causing severe internal injuries and significant bleeding.

Police were notified, visited the scene, and documented the incident. Mauda was rushed to Victorious Medical Centre, Butogota, where she is in critical condition. Nuwagaba’s body was taken to the Kayonza Growers Tea Factory H/C 2 mortuary for a postmortem examination. Authorities recovered a small, long iron bar with a sharp end covered in blood and a hoe with a blood-stained wooden handle at the scene.

Nuwagaba had previously driven his mother from her home, leaving him to live alone.

Investigations are ongoing.
