A tragic incident of suicide has been reported in Kakoni Cell, Nyarugunda Parish, Kambuga Sub-County, Kanungu District. The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Niwamanya Nelson, was discovered by his mother after allegedly taking his own life by hanging.
According to police reports, the deceased had just returned from a burial in Katojo and informed his mother that someone was looking for her at a neighbor’s house. While she went to investigate, Nelson reportedly remained behind. Upon returning home, she found her son hanging from a rope in their sitting room.
Herbert Ndamanyire, a 44-year-old peasant farmer from the same area, reported the incident to Kambuga Police Station. The police immediately responded by visiting the scene, documenting the case, and conducting a postmortem examination before handing over the body to the family for burial.
The case, which was registered under SD REF 17/13/09/2024, is still under investigation. The motive behind the suicide remains unclear.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and emphasized the need for public awareness regarding mental health issues.
