The Local Council One (LC1) Chairperson in Kanungu District has been encouraged to embrace poultry farming as a means to increase their income, supplementing the low salary they receive from the government. This advice was given by the Kanungu District Chairperson, Eng. Sam Arineitwe Kajojo, during a meeting with all local council leaders from the district.

Eng. Kajojo noted that local council leaders, including councilors at the sub-county and district levels, receive minimal salaries in the form of allowances. To aid their socioeconomic transformation, he urged them to take up poultry farming. As a model farmer himself, Eng. Kajojo committed to assisting organized groups of local council leaders by providing them with chicks. He pledged to give an additional 50% of the chicks they purchase for free, as a way to support their income generation efforts.

It was highlighted that every LC1 Chairperson is paid only UGX 10,000 per month, amounting to UGX 120,000 annually. This modest sum does not align with the extensive responsibilities they undertake on behalf of the government, such as monitoring and ensuring security.

Eng. Kajojo mentioned that different LC1 groups in sub-counties and town councils, such as Kinaba Sub-county, Kanungu, and Nyakabungo Town Council, have already benefited from this initiative, which has positively impacted their economic situation. He encouraged other town councils and sub-counties to adopt the same approach.

Some LC1 Chairpersons from Kanungu Town Council and Kinaba Sub-county reported that the poultry projects they started under Eng. Kajojo’s guidance has significantly boosted their capital. Some were even able to invest in other livestock, such as goats, by selling their chickens.

Other Chairpersons have also pledged to form associations to receive support through poultry farming, acknowledging that their government pay is insufficient to sustain their families.4o
