The Kanungu District Council sitting held on Tuesday at the district headquarters was adjourned indefinitely after failing to raise the required quorum.
The session, chaired by District Speaker Hon. Frank Byaruhanga Fara, had been convened to discuss the overall revenue performance for the 2024/2025 financial year. However, only a few council members attended, and some failed to review previous minutes, prompting the Speaker to suspend the meeting until further notice.
Speaker Byaruhanga said the next meeting will also include the review of two previous sets of minutes to ensure council business is properly concluded.
During the brief sitting, the council elected Hon. Evelyn Kyasimire, the Female Youth Councilor, as the new Deputy Speaker. She went through unopposed, replacing Hon. Loice Kembabazi, the Female Workers Representative, who resigned after securing another job.
Addressing the council, Kanungu District Chairperson Eng. Sam Kajojo Arinaitwe commended members for their efforts but urged them to focus on improving the district’s road network. He pledged to engage national road authorities to prioritize the rehabilitation of key roads, including Kijubwe–Kiringa, Katete–Kigaarama–Nyamirama, Bugarama–Kembeho, Rutenga–Kinaba–Kiziba–Mpungu, and Burema–Kanyungisi roads.
According to financial performance reports presented during the session, locally raised revenue for the 2024/2025 financial year stands at UGX 1.49 million, representing 75 percent of the annual target of UGX 5.6 million.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Deputy Speaker, Hon. Loice Kembabazi, thanked council members for their cooperation and called upon them to support the new Deputy Speaker for the smooth running of council business.
