Kanungu District marked World AIDS Day in a vibrant and impactful manner by hosting athletics competitions aimed at raising HIV awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles. Sponsored by Namara Betty Mutabazi Kataba, an aspiring Woman Member of Parliament for Kanungu District, the event attracted participants from various parts of the region.
The competitions featured three categories, with outstanding performances from local talent:
- 5 Kilometres: Namara Crispus from Kayonza claimed victory.
- 10 Kilometres: Natukunda Mansolo from Kanyantoroogo emerged as the winner.
- 21 Kilometres: Biryomunisho Mark from Kabare took the top spot.
The chief guest, Moses Kipsiro, a former Commonwealth Games champion, inspired the youth with his journey of determination and triumph. He encouraged them to pursue athletics with passion and hard work, emphasizing that discipline and healthy choices are essential for success. Kipsiro also highlighted the importance of avoiding behaviors that increase the risk of HIV, stressing that good health is fundamental to achieving greatness in sports and life.
Kanungu District Sports Officer, Arinaitwe Robert, emphasized how athletics contributes to talent development and enhances mental and physical well-being.
Speaking at the event, Namara Betty Mutabazi Kataba highlighted its purpose: nurturing local talent, improving fitness, and fostering social growth. She called on young people to adopt healthy lifestyles and abstain from risky behaviors to protect themselves from HIV and other challenges that could hinder their potential.
To celebrate the efforts of all participants, gifts and awards were distributed, ensuring that everyone left motivated and inspired to pursue both their athletic and personal goals.
The event was not only a celebration of talent and fitness but also a powerful reminder of the role of community action in combating HIV and building a healthier future for all.
