Coffee farmers in Kambuga subcounty, Kanungu district have been urged to protect their coffee plantations from increasing theft in the region.
Rutazaana Silver, Chairperson of Nyarutoojo coffee farmers and district councilor representing Kambuga sub-county, emphasized that theft of coffee in Kambuga and nearby areas has surged, particularly during the night, posing a threat to farmers’ harvests.
This concern heightened after two individuals were apprehended yesterday with five basins of coffee allegedly stolen from Mwebenbezi Furugence’s plantation in Kambuga.
Silver underscored the need for farmers to be vigilant, especially during nighttime when theft incidents are common. He mentioned that some perpetrators also strike during the day when families are away from their farms.
To address this issue, farmers are reevaluating their strategies and implementing measures to safeguard their plantations. Some have resorted to hiring guards to deter thieves. Silver warned individuals involved in coffee theft to cease their activities, emphasizing the farmers’ determination to tackle this problem decisively.
He called for collaboration between local leaders and law enforcement officers to conduct patrols and eliminate thieves from the area.
