AMOS K

Residents of Kajara County in Ntungamo District are decrying the poor state of the Kagarama-Rutooma road.

This road connects Kagarama Town Council and Ihunga Subcounty to Rutooma Town Council, which is essential for people to transport goods to these towns. However, due to the road’s poor condition, residents are facing significant challenges, with many holes making travel dangerous.

Boaz Bwengye, a businessman in Ihunga, said the road is in a terrible state, and using it feels like a risk to their lives. He added that they have approached the responsible authorities, but have only received promises, with officials explaining that this road falls within Ihunga Subcounty, which was cut off from Kagarama Town Council. Due to low tax revenue in the area compared to the needs, he called on the government to step in and offer assistance.

Speaking to our reporter, Didas Niwamanya, a boda boda rider in Rutooma, confirmed how bad the road is, saying it is full of holes, making services difficult for the community. She also described how swampy the area becomes, and during heavy rains, the little murram they had laid down is destroyed. She said the road is really in a poor state.

Obadiah Turyaguma, a boda boda rider at the Rutooma stage, expressed his frustration, saying there have been accidents, particularly during the rainy season, due to the slippery nature of the road. He called for quick intervention and suggested connecting the road to Rwamabondo.

However, speaking to the Chairperson LC3 of Ihunga Subcounty, Deo Nfuzakyi, he said they are allocated road funds last, which amounts to four million and eight hundred thousand shillings. He explained that they have many roads to work on, and each financial year, they focus on one road in every parish. He further highlighted the challenge of having only one tractor in the district, making it difficult to work on all roads in the subcounty. He called on the community to participate in the work, as plans to improve the road are already in place.
