Boda boda riders in Rukungiri have been identified as the leading contributors to the increasing number of road accidents in both rural and urban areas. Reports indicate that only 10% of boda boda cyclists possess driving permits, while 90% lack proper training and certification.

According to Rukungiri OC Traffic ASP Mbowamukama Abel, the rise in accidents is largely due to reckless riding, failure to observe traffic rules, and ignorance of road signs. Speaking to our reporter, ASP Abel acknowledged that many boda boda cyclists lack the necessary skills to operate safely on the roads. Additionally, he noted that at least 2% of car drivers also lack valid driving permits.

“Some boda boda cyclists lack adequate training and skills to observe road signs and traffic rules while conducting their profession. Only 10% of boda boda cyclists have driving permits, and at least 2% of car drivers also lack permits,” ASP Abel stated.

However, he confirmed that the traffic technical team has been conducting operations and sensitization efforts through various social media platforms. He also revealed that in July, the Ministry of Works is expected to intervene by sensitizing boda boda cyclists and drivers while also facilitating the process of acquiring driving permits.

Caleb Begumanya, the Rubabo boda boda chairperson who also leads Rubabo Boda Boda Enyoga Sacco and coordinates boda boda associations in the Kigezi sub-region, admitted that the lack of training, reckless riding, and drunk driving have significantly contributed to the rise in accidents.

He urged boda boda riders to be more professional and accountable, acquire driving permits, and exercise caution on the roads. He also called upon all boda boda riders to attend the 20th Rubabo Enyoga AGM, where they will be sensitized on road signs and traffic rules.

Similarly, Tumuramye Besigye (Tumu), the Rukungiri taxi drivers’ chairperson, expressed concern over the high accident rates and urged drivers to act professionally. He attributed most accidents to careless driving and lack of proper training, as many drivers are trained informally by fellow riders.

He emphasized the need for structured training programs to help reduce accident rates and save lives.
