Residents of Kahoko Parish in Nyakishenyi Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have raised concerns over incidents where unknown people attack farmers’ domestic animals, cut them (but don’t kill them), and leave them in poor condition.
Residents say that unknown people sneak into their homes and cut their animals, causing injuries and losses.
Atukwase Apophia, a resident, told our reporter that on the morning of 20th April 2025, she found her cow alive but lying in a pool of blood after an unknown person opened the kraal, pushed the cow out, and cut its hind legs.
She said this is due to insecurity that has affected their area, putting them on the verge of giving up farming.
She added that she is worried because the injured cow was obtained through Parish Development Model funds, which are supposed to be refunded to the government after some time.
Sayuni Deus, another resident, said this habit is common in their area and is discouraging people from embracing commercial farming to eradicate poverty.
He said that recently, unknown people cut animals belonging to Xaverio Byanyima, Mr. Christopher, and Mrs. Peace Katunguka—all residents of the same area.
Residents are now beseeching leaders to tighten local security to prevent these acts from continuing.
Juliet Jabayo, the LC5 councillor for Nyakishenyi Sub-county, confirmed the reports, noting that such incidents have increased not only in Kahoko Parish but in the entire sub-county.
She urged farmers to be vigilant and safeguard their animals to avoid further losses.
On the other hand, a section of residents revealed that animal theft is also a growing challenge in Nyakishenyi, with many farmers suffering losses after losing their animals.
Residents say authorities should do whatever it takes to enhance security and protect farmers from thieves.
