The Ministry of Water and Environment has today Wednesday 23rd Nov 2022 commissioned the long awaited Kahengye Water project and handed it over to National Water and sewerage corperation on probation meaning it is still under testing for a period of 12months.
In 2016, ministry of Water and Environment commenced the construction of Kahengye Water project at a tune of 44 billion shillings funded by world Bank expected to be finished in 2018 but the project stalled
It was commissioned today, with the cost shooting up to 54 billion shillings with some work still unfinished
The Ministry of Water and Environment Permanent Secretary Alfred Okidi Okoti who presided over the commissioning applauded the local leaders of Rukungiri district for containing the pressure mounted by residents when they project delayed and clarified that the delay was brought about the first contractor TECHNOFAB who had challenges saying that the work was completed by Vidas and Vambeco contractors.
Alfred Okidi Okoti affirmed that the work done is of hight quality and appealed to people of Rukungiri and staff National Water to protect the project against vandalism and embark on preserving the catchment area along the upper part of River Kahengye to preserve water for the project and sustain it for generations.
The Assistant Commissioner for Urban water in the Ministry of water and Environment Nuwamanya Herbert revealed that they were disappointed by the TECHNOFAB and that the ministry is going to work National Water and sewerage corporation to extend the water to users
The Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner Steven Nsubuga Bewayo who is the head of monitoring and commissioning of government projects in the district applauded the leaders of Rukungiri for containing the temper of the people who had planned a demonstration and urged people to stop criticizing government yet it is doing mega projects.
The Rukungiri chairman LC5 Geoffrey Kyomukama received the project with thanks noting the project will transform the district and appealed to the users to avoid misusing it.
Others present were Rukungiri chief Administrative officer Masokoyi Wasswa, Mayor Charles Makuru, Rukungiri district water officer Twekwase Deus among others.
