Prof. Mondo Kagonyera Calls for Unity and Public Ethical Discipline Among Campus Students During the Launch of Kabale University Branch in Rukungiri District

The Rukungiri branch campus officially opened its doors this afternoon following a launch and opening ceremony, which included signing agreements and a handover between the North Kigezi Diocese led by Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe and the Kabale University administration. Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe and Prof. Mondo Enock Kagonyera both signed the agreements. The event was held at the former Rukungiri PTC in Nyakiina, Kyamakanda, Rukungiri District.

Speaking during the official launch and opening as the guest of honor and after addressing journalists, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, the Kabale University Chancellor, acknowledged that it is the government’s policy to ensure every area has access to nearby educational services and approved centers to support community development and completely abolish ignorance.

He emphasized that education and technical knowledge are the keys to success and the most important tools any Ugandan needs, regardless of their profession.

Prof. Kagonyera assured the congregation that, historically, any Kabale University branch must be different from other universities. As a public university, it will allow students from all religions, sexes, races, and genders. He added that, in line with church ethics, discipline, fear of God, and soft skills should be prioritized among students to uphold the legacy of building a better nation in the future.

Prof. Joyce Constance Kwesiga, the Kabale University Vice Chancellor, also expressed joy and gratitude to the public during her remarks, announcing the university’s launch and opening. She acknowledged the introduction of several faculties, including:

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Bachelor of Primary Teachers Education
  • Bachelor of Public Administration
  • Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
  • Bachelor of Agriculture
  • Bachelor of Business Administration
  • Bachelor of Information and Technology

However, she confirmed that other courses would be added gradually since facilities and required materials, especially for science courses, are not yet established. She called on the people of Rukungiri and the surrounding areas to use the campus as an opportunity for progress and development.

Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe, the North Kigezi Diocese Bishop, announced with great enthusiasm that, officially, as of 23rd May 2025, the place formerly known as Rukungiri PTC has become Kabale University Rukungiri Branch Campus — a public university.

He called on Rukungiri residents and neighbors to use the campus as a chance to educate their children, upgrade their studies, and immediately start constructing rental buildings or engage in business to earn income. He emphasized that a university brings development.

However, Bishop Onesimus raised concerns over the potential introduction of bad behaviors and habits that may arise with the arrival of campus students. He firmly condemned such behaviors, stressing that the church would not allow them on land owned by the North Kigezi Church, especially with a nearby church present. Prof. Kagonyera also condemned such conduct, and Bishop Asiimwe fully supported and collaborated with the idea.

Meanwhile, Kyomukama Geoffrey, speaking on behalf of the government during the launch, expressed his gratitude for seeing promises fulfilled.

Citing Rukungiri’s history, he emphasized that the Kabale University Rukungiri Branch Campus is the first-ever public campus to be opened in the area. He called on residents, farmers, and entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity to earn income, stating that the area and Rukungiri District at large have now become agents of socio-economic transformation.

The official launch and opening ceremony was also attended by other leaders and prominent figures, including religious leaders such as former North Kigezi Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev. Patric Tugume Tusingwire, Prof. Adson Kakuru, and a large delegation from Kabale University main campus.
