The Rujumbura Member of Parliament and Minister of Security, Hon. Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, has retained his position as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson for Rukungiri District following party elections held today at Rukungiri Main Stadium.
Hon. Muhwezi, who has held the post for several years, secured victory over his sole contender, General Henry Tumukunde, garnering 464 votes. Speaking shortly after the announcement, Jim Muhwezi thanked voters and party leaders for what he described as a free and fair election, although he acknowledged incidents of intimidation and even injuries during the process.
Muhwezi assured those who were injured during the election process that justice will prevail, promising legal action against the perpetrators now that the election has concluded in his favor.
However, General Henry Tumukunde, who contested the position, dismissed the election results, claiming the process was marred by irregularities. He reiterated his decision to boycott the elections and stated that he will challenge the outcome in court.
