Kabale district registered 635 teenage pregnancies in the last 5 months, according to the Kabale district probations officer Monica Muhumuza.
Muhumuza disclosed this information today morning during a press conference in the Kabale District Board room, in which key highlights on the Violation of Children’s rights were given as Kabale District prepares to mark the Day of the African child on 28/06/2022 at Kigezi high school primary Playground.
Muhumuza revealed that the district registered 124 teenage pregnancies in January, 133 in February, 134 in March, 105 in April and 139 in May. She added that these cases were between 15 and 18 and only one case was below 15.
Muhumuza cited the failure by parents and caretakers to take responsibility for their children as the major cause of teenage pregnancies in the district adding that parents should take necessary steps to reduce teenage pregnancies among young girls in the district.
The June 16 annual event honors students who were massacred in Soweto, South Africa, in 1976 for protesting against education injustice and inequality in the apartheid regime.
Muhumuza said as Kabale district decided to mark this day on 28/06/2022 because of the conflicting programs that were ongoing on its actual day of 16 this month
Thhis year’s Day of African Child theme is “eliminating harmful practices affecting children: progress on policy and practice since 2013.
