More than 200-foot pilgrims from Kabale Diocese, who embarked on their journey to Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrines in Wakiso District ahead of this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations on May 21, 2024, have resumed their trek from Katende parish in Masaka Diocese after resting there overnight.

Originating from Kabale, Rubanda, Rukiga, and Kisoro Districts, these pilgrims are led by Alphonse Biraho, a catechist at Christ the King Catholic Church Parish in Kabale Municipality, who also chairs the pilgrims’ group in Kabale Diocese.

Biraho reported to our correspondent that the journey has been obstacle-free, and all pilgrims are in good health and high spirits as they continue their trek to Namugongo.

Their itinerary includes a final stopover at Bakateyamba Home in Nalukolongo later today before they proceed to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. Biraho shared that among the pilgrims, the youngest is 17 years old, while the eldest is 82. Additionally, five Christians from the Anglican Church of Uganda have joined the journey.

The annual event on June 3rd commemorates the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs who were executed for their faith between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of the Buganda Kingdom.
