Kabale District National Resistance Movement (NRM) leadership has directed the Southern Division NRM chairperson to step aside, citing alleged violations of party principles and support for candidates outside the party.

In a letter dated 13th December 2025, Kabale District NRM Administrator, Amos Rwansheija, appointed Hilda Kedembe as the acting NRM Chairperson for Southern Division. The move follows allegations against the substantive chairperson, Narasensio Tumwesigye, who party officials claim has acted contrary to the NRM’s code of conduct.

Rwansheija stated that Tumwesigye had been observed on multiple occasions campaigning for opposition and independent candidates, actions that contravene NRM guidelines. The directive for him to step aside allows the vice chairperson to assume leadership temporarily.

The decision comes after a video circulated on social media showing Tumwesigye at a rally for Sentaro Byamugisha, an independent candidate for Kabale Municipality mayor. The rally, held last Friday at St. Ignatius University playground, reportedly showed Tumwesigye presenting a shield and spear to Byamugisha while expressing support for him. In the footage, he also compared the NRM symbol of a bus to one associated with the independent candidate.

Rwansheija emphasized that the NRM expects its members, particularly those in leadership positions, to uphold party discipline and refrain from supporting candidates outside the party, warning that such actions undermine unity.

When contacted, Tumwesigye said he had not yet received the official letter from the district leadership. He added that he should not be singled out, noting that other party members have also supported non-NRM candidates and questioned why only he was being targeted.
