The increased cases of domestic violence have raised concern among Buyanja Sub-county residents and local leaders in Rukungiri District.

Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the LCIII Chairperson of Buyanja Sub-county, says that on average, over 20 cases of domestic violence are reported monthly. Agaba adds that despite the high number, they have reliable information indicating that many cases—especially those where men are the victims—go unreported and often result in loss of lives.

According to Rubondo, between 7 to 10 cases of domestic violence are registered each week, up from between 3 to 5 cases previously.

He says their intelligence shows that many more cases are not reported. Agaba notes that at least five cases of domestic violence stem from land disputes, adding that the situation is serious and needs urgent attention.

Agaba further noted that the number of male victims of domestic violence in the district is on the increase.

Rubondo says that most male victims rush to friends and relatives instead of reporting the matter to the relevant authorities. He called upon leaders to work hand in hand to minimise cases of domestic violence.

Sylivia Turinawe, the area councilor for Nyakabungo and Kasheeshe parishes in Buyanja Sub-county, says that fights over control of family resources are among the leading causes of domestic violence.

She added that excessive consumption of alcohol among residents has also increased cases of domestic violence. Turinawe noted that situations where one family member works to support up to six others are another major cause of domestic violence.

Turinawe says there is a need to sensitise residents on proper resource management and conflict resolution.

She called upon district leadership to plan and roll out sensitisation meetings in the sub-county to curb domestic violence, noting that prolonged family conflicts hinder development.
