The Speaker of Kabale District, Flavia Nyinakiiza Kanagyizi, has issued a stern warning regarding the deteriorating hygiene standards at the district council premises, threatening to close the washrooms and toilets if immediate action is not taken.

Presiding over a district council session on Thursday, Speaker Nyinakiiza expressed her frustration over the filthy state of the council washrooms, as well as the general cleanliness of the district. She recounted the embarrassment district leaders faced when they hosted a delegation from the Kigezi sub-region, in preparation for President Museveni’s recent visit, only to find the district in an unkempt state, with overgrown grass and poorly maintained facilities.

Nyinakiiza emphasized that the sanitation challenges extend beyond the council hall to the District Education Officer’s office block. In a shocking revelation, she admitted that she has personally taken on the responsibility of cleaning some offices, despite the presence of staff assigned to this duty. She called on the clerk to the council to issue strict warnings to groups using the council hall for meetings, instructing them to bring their own dustbins and leave the venue clean.

The Speaker lamented that on several occasions, she has been forced to clean her own office and even pour water to neutralize the foul smell emanating from the toilets, questioning the effectiveness of the office attendants responsible for maintaining hygiene.

In a bold statement, she warned that unless immediate improvements are made, she, together with the clerk to the council, will lock all the district buildings, restricting access to the toilets to themselves.

“I was elected to be a speaker, not a cleaner,” Nyinakiiza asserted. “You can call me a spitting cobra, a puff adder, or a python, but these names only make me stronger in delivering my duties.”

Her remarks sparked discussions among council members, with several supporting the need for improved sanitation at the district headquarters. The Speaker’s firm stance is expected to push district authorities into taking urgent action to address the hygiene concerns and restore order at the premises.
