Kabale Diocese has teamed up with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) to enhance household income by boosting Irish potato farming in Bucundura Catholic Parish, Rukiga District.
Farmers in Kafunjo Village, located in Bucundura Parish, Kashambya Sub-county, Rukiga District, have been equipped with vital skills to improve their Irish potato production.
Rev. Fr. Herbert Agaba, the parish priest of Bucundura, stated that this partnership aims to enhance agricultural output and reduce poverty among the parishioners.
Jerome Kubiriba, the Director of NARO, stationed at the Kachwekano Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Center in Kabale District, praised the church for providing land to set up demonstration farms. These farms have served as training grounds for farmers to learn how to overcome low agricultural yields.
Kubiriba was taken aback by statistics revealing the high poverty levels in the Kigezi region, which ranks fourth highest among regions in the country. He expressed concern over the hard work of the Bakiga people in farming, which still results in low production and high poverty levels, a situation NARO aims to address.
Bandaganire Erineho, Chairman of LC3 Kashambya Sub-county, Rukiga District, urged the community to reduce the amount of productive land used for tree planting and instead focus more on crop farming. He highlighted the importance of leveraging the expertise of NARO’s agricultural specialists, who have designated their area as a model parish.
