In Rubirizi District, police have apprehended a 22-year-old man on charges of killing his biological mother.
The incident occurred on June 25, 2024, around 8:00 AM in Kirugu 1A village, Kirugu Parish, Kirugu Sub County, Rubirizi District.
Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as 22-year-old Johnson Tumukunde, a peasant residing at the mentioned address.
Tumusiime also identified the deceased as 50-year-old Alice Nshemerirwe, a hairdresser and resident of Kirugu 1A village, Kirugu Parish, Kirugu Sub County, Rubirizi District.
It is alleged that the suspect, who has been undergoing mental health treatment, had recent conflicts with his mother. According to Jonan Tumukunde, who reported the matter to the police, the suspect had threatened to kill his mother with a hammer on June 23, 2024. This threat was reported to the Kirugu police station.
As police were attempting to apprehend the suspect, he encountered his mother at his brother’s home and struck her on the head with a hoe, killing her instantly.
Tumusiime stated that the deceased’s body was taken to Rugazi Health Centre IV for a postmortem, and investigations are ongoing.
