Fideris Nshimimana, an 18-year-old man who had been held on remand for two and a half months for aggravated robbery in Kisoro Government Prison, has been released by the Grade One Magistrate Court in Kisoro District. The presiding judge, His Worship Dismas Muchelule, made the decision in light of an appeal from the complainant, Mugisha Kamanukye.

The alleged robbery took place on October 26, 2023, at Chibumba trading center, Chahafi Town Council, Kisoro District, where Mugisha Kamanukye’s property was reportedly stolen. However, during the court proceedings, Kamanukye requested forgiveness for the accused, Fideris Nshimimana. He explained that discussions with Fideris’ parents led them to believe that he was wrongly implicated in the crime.

Expressing his determination to find the true perpetrator responsible for falsely accusing Fideris, Kamanukye invoked Act 160, which guides the court on forgiveness, and referred to Act 126 in the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which allows for forgiveness. Taking these considerations into account, His Worship Muchelule decided to release Fideris Nshimimana from custody.
