A wave of grief, fear, and outrage has gripped the village of Katunga West in Ihunga Sub-county, Kajara County, following the gruesome murder of a one-year-old girl whose mutilated body was discovered dumped in a nearby bush.

The deceased, identified as Nichole Aryatwijuka, had gone missing on Sunday while accompanying her mother to prayers at Katunga Church of Uganda. After a frantic two-day search, the family was informed on Tuesday evening that the child’s body had been found abandoned in a bush with horrifying injuries — her tongue and genitals had been removed.

Speaking through tears, the child’s grandmother, only identified as Kyarimpa, described the murder as inhumane and incomprehensible. “How could anyone be so cruel to such a young, innocent life?” she cried.

The incident has left the entire community reeling in shock and fear. Local leaders, including LC1 Chairperson David Rundana and Women’s Council Chairperson Gaudeli Tumusiime, have condemned the brutal killing in the strongest terms and called for urgent action from law enforcement.

“This is not just a crime against one family. It is a crime against humanity,” said Tumusiime. “We call upon police and government authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators face justice.”

Community members say the incident has created widespread panic among parents. Sulaina Mpirirwe, a local resident, said families are now living in fear. “Parents are too scared to let their children go to school or even play outside. We feel completely unsafe,” she said.

The grieving parents have appealed to the government and police for protection and justice. “We want justice for our baby. No family should have to experience this nightmare,” said Nichole’s father.

As investigations continue, local leaders are urging increased police patrols, stronger community vigilance, and enhanced child protection measures. The tragic killing has reignited calls for urgent reforms in safeguarding vulnerable children in rural communities and bolstering public safety across the region.

Authorities are yet to make any arrests, but the community remains hopeful that justice will prevail and peace will be restored in Katunga West.
