The High Court in Rukungiri has scheduled a visit to Ruhinda sub-county on June 5th, 2024, to inspect the lands where residents allege damage during a wetland restoration project by Rukungiri district officials.

Judge Tom Chemutai disclosed this during a hearing at Rukungiri High Court, attended by legal representatives for Ruhinda residents, government prosecutors, district officials, and some residents.

Judge Chemutai emphasized the importance of firsthand assessment before proceeding with the case, aiming for an informed decision regarding the disputed wetlands. Arinaitwe Peter, leading the legal team for the residents, highlighted the significance of this step, suggesting it would provide clarity amid conflicting claims.

Residents filed a lawsuit against Rukungiri District Local Government and three government officials, alleging unlawful property destruction during wetland demarcation and restoration in Ruhinda Sub-County. The legal team seeks a declaration of illegality and violation of human rights, along with compensation totaling 5 billion Ugandan shillings for affected residents.

Arinaitwe Peter also called for an investigation into allegations against Ruhinda sub-county GISO Moses Bindeeba for purportedly soliciting bribes during the wetland restoration. He cited mobile money statements as evidence of financial transactions involving Bindeeba. However, Bindeeba denied the accusations, suggesting that residents should present their claims directly rather than relying solely on mobile money records.
