The public has been urged to take preventive measures to stop the deadly disease ulcers.
Speaking to our reporter, Rukungiri District Health Educator Alban Natukunda highlighted the possible causes of ulcers, saying it specifically affects the stomach (Ekyishansha). He noted that many people delay eating food, some consume excessive alcohol, and some of the signs include loss of appetite, vomiting the little food they might have eaten, a lot of pain after eating, getting hungry quickly, and loss of weight.
Alban urged the public to always eat food on time, including school children, saying ulcers can affect both the young and the old if they delay eating. He advised parents to pack food for their children while going to school.
He further advised people to avoid taking alcohol, as it increases stomach acid, and recommended eating greens, vegetables, and milk for those already affected, as well as visiting hospitals for treatment to reduce the pain.
Speaking to Dr. Annet Namara, a professional doctor and Director of Kadoth Clinics, she said ulcers cause wounds in the abdomen. She cited stress, eating food late, and hereditary factors as causes, along with overconsumption of ginger, lemon, and garlic at the same time, which is harmful to the body.
Dr. Annet also noted that some signs include constant back and chest pains, loss of appetite—which can sometimes lead to blood loss—and cooling of the intestines, which may lead to stomach cancer. She advised the public to visit hospitals for treatment and work hard to reduce stress in their lives.
