Health officials in Rukungiri district are calling on mothers to commit to breastfeeding their children for at least two years, emphasizing the practice as crucial for the physical and mental development of infants.
Speaking to Boona FM, Natukunda Aliban, the Rukungiri District Health Educator, highlighted that regular breastfeeding plays a critical role in protecting newborns from various infectious diseases. He noted that breastfeeding for two full years offers unmatched benefits to a child’s well-being.
He cautioned that poor nutrition during infancy could lead to long-term consequences, including poor academic performance due to impaired neurological development.
Meanwhile, Madam Annet Namara Kadoth, a healthcare professional at Kadoth’s Clinics, echoed Aliban’s remarks, describing breast milk as nature’s perfect food for babies.
Namara further noted that breast milk is rich in antibodies that strengthen the baby’s immune system, reducing their risk of asthma, allergies, and frequent infections.
The experts are urging the public to support mothers in breastfeeding and ensuring they receive proper nutrition, as investing in early child health lays a strong foundation for the nation’s future.
