Police in Rubirizi District are investigating a suspected case of suicide involving a 25-year-old man who drowned in the Kyambura River while fleeing arrest.

The incident occurred on April 18, 2025, at around 3:00 PM at the Kyambura River Bridge in Kirugu Sub County.

Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson Marcial Tumusiime identified the deceased as Gerald Muhirwe, a peasant farmer and resident of Omukabale Village, Kikumbo Parish, Kirugu Sub County in Rubirizi District.

Muhirwe was reportedly facing charges of threatening violence against his family members and being in possession of opium.

According to John Mary Mutabaazi, a police officer attached to Rubirizi Central Police Station, the suspect fled and jumped into the river upon arrival at the scene.

A search operation ensued and continued for several days until April 23, 2025, when local residents recovered Muhirwe’s body from the water around 4:00 PM.

The body was taken to Rugazi Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination as police continue with their investigations.
