Police in Kabale District have launched a manhunt for unidentified suspect(s) involved in the theft of a firearm from a security guard stationed at Pearl Hotel, located in Kigongi Cell, Central Ward, Central Division, Kabale Municipality.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 10, 2025, at around 4:20 am. According to reports from the territorial police, a security guard identified as Osbert Byonanebye, 23, attached to Ruhama Veterans Security Services, had his SAR rifle, number 564210028-15120, stolen while he was allegedly asleep on duty.
The firearm, which had two rounds of ammunition at the time of the theft, was reportedly snatched by an unknown assailant who fled the scene heading toward Rushaki. Although Byonanebye attempted to pursue the thief, his efforts were unsuccessful.
Police have opened a case of rifle theft at Kabale Central Police Station, and investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
In a statement released by ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, the public has been urged to remain vigilant and security conscious.
“We appeal to all members of the public to be alert. Should you see any suspicious individuals or items, especially anything related to this incident, please report immediately to the nearest security authorities,” Maate said.
The police are intensifying efforts to recover the stolen weapon and ensure that those behind the theft are brought to justice.
