Concerns have been raised by parents and students of Greenland Secondary School in Kyafoora parish, Rugarama North sub-county, Ntungamo district, regarding the school’s closure. The closure is perceived to pose a threat to education in the sub-county, as Greenland Secondary School has been a crucial educational institution in the area. It is noted as the only secondary school in Rugarama North Sub County, with the nearest alternatives being Bwanga Secondary School and Bwanga High School, both located in Nyarushanje, Rukungiri district.
Residents like Oliver Bainomugisha, a parent at Greenland Secondary School, expressed shock upon learning that the school authorities had prevented students from attending the 1st term, citing the school’s inability to open. He highlighted the school’s favorable fee structure and proximity, urging the government to intervene and address the situation.
Alex Muhwezi, one of the school directors, explained that Greenland Secondary School, established in 2013, faced challenges leading to its non-operation in the upcoming term. These challenges include low enrollment, with only 44 students at the end of the last academic year, and difficulties with uncooperative parents who were often defaulting on school fees.
Niwamanya Ivan Rwanyakibare, the Rugarama North sub-county chairperson, emphasized Greenland Secondary School’s significance as the sole secondary school in the area. He called upon the government to support the school, aligning it with the government’s policy to have a secondary school in each sub-county. Plans are underway for a meeting between the sub-county chairperson, school authorities, and parents to find solutions to the challenges faced by Greenland Secondary School.
