Leaders in Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district, are expressing concern over the delayed construction of the Rukungiri Industrial Park. Despite the allocation of over 600 acres of land by the district authorities for the industrial park’s development, there has been no visible progress, raising doubts about the commitment to industrialize the area.
The Bwambara sub-county chairperson, Chris Kagayano, and other leaders are facing pressure from residents who previously rented and cultivated the land for farming but have seen it remain unused for almost two years. Responding to public inquiries about the park’s status has become challenging for the leaders, as they lack clear answers regarding the progress of the industrial park.
Kagayano emphasized that while industrial parks in other parts of Uganda are benefiting the local population, Rukungiri is yet to witness any positive developments in this regard. In response to the concerns, Rukungiri district chairperson Geofrey Kyomukama assured residents that progress in establishing the Industrial Park is on track, although the required land has not yet been acquired.
Kyomukama highlighted the potential benefits of the industrial park, including addressing unemployment, providing job opportunities for the youth, and enhancing the value of locally produced agricultural products in the district. The Uganda Investment Authority, tasked with constructing 25 industrial parks across the country, aims to create jobs, promote skills development, and boost Uganda’s exports to increase the country’s revenue base.
