Ms. Agnes Batengas, the Governor of Rotary International, District 9214, overseeing Uganda and Tanzania, has urged Rotarians of the Rukungiri Central Club to lead efforts in planting memorial street trees.

She made this call today, Thursday, 23rd January 2025, during her address at Rukungiri Inn Hotel, located in Eastern Division, Rukungiri District, as part of her oversight visit.

The Rotarians welcomed Governor Agnes Batengas at Omukakabada suburb and accompanied her to the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC). The visit also included the planting of compound trees at Makobore High School and Rukungiri Inn Hotel, followed by a fellowship session.

In her address, Rotarian Agnes Batengas commended the club’s significant achievements, such as combating polio and cancer, installing water sources, preserving the environment, and promoting hygiene and sanitation. She called for renewed dedication to recruiting the younger generation and emphasized the importance of planting street trees as a lasting legacy, inspired by Simei Kakungulu’s work on Kampala City streets.

Rotarian Steven Bewayo Nsubuga, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), praised Rotary Club for complementing government efforts in service delivery and improving the lives of disadvantaged populations. He urged the public to join Rotary and work together for the betterment of the community.

Andrew Tumwine Kameraho, the Chairman of Rotary District 9214, called on the public to support Rotary initiatives, highlighting the significant projects already achieved and emphasizing the importance of community participation. He underscored the need for collaborative efforts to enhance service delivery and foster connections with resourceful individuals.

Saul Katazahansi, the President of the Rotary Club of Rukungiri Central, commended members for their cooperation and outlined the club’s dedication to growing its membership, particularly among the youth. He highlighted ongoing projects, including training female prisoners at Rukungiri Government Prisons in making sanitary pads, installing dustbins at Rwenshama Landing Site, and implementing a comprehensive street tree planting program along the Rukungiri-Kihiihi tarmac road.

Gard Arinaitwe Gakibayo, the headteacher of Makobore High School, warmly welcomed the initiative to plant compound trees. He emphasized the importance of replanting following years of massive harvests and recalled the shade and beauty that compound trees provided during his time as a student at the school.
