The territorial police in Rukungiri District have launched an investigation into a shocking incident of kidnap and aggravated robbery that occurred in Rukungiri Town on January 20, 2025. The victim, Atwine Daniel, a 24-year-old student and resident of Kitanda Cell, Nyakaina Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, was allegedly abducted and robbed of 31,850,000 Ugandan shillings and a Tecno Spark 5 mobile phone.
According to reports, the incident happened at around 11:00 a.m. as Atwine, who works at Super Vet Drug Shop in Rukungiri, was walking along Republic Road on his way to deposit the money in a bank. A white Toyota Wish vehicle, registration number UBH 905Y, pulled up alongside him. The car had three unidentified occupants, one of whom was dressed in a khaki uniform resembling that of the Uganda Police.
Witnesses say the suspects forcefully grabbed Atwine, pushed him into the vehicle, and sped off. Along the way, the victim was robbed of the cash and his mobile phone before being abandoned in Bushenyi District.
Police have since registered the case at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Rukungiri. Officers have visited the scene, documented evidence, recorded statements from witnesses, and conducted a medical examination of the victim. However, the suspects remain at large.
The vehicle used in the crime, a white Toyota Wish with registration number UBH 905Y, has been blacklisted by the police ICT and CCTV systems to aid in tracing the suspects. Police have urged the public to report any sightings of the vehicle immediately so it can be impounded for further investigation.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, assured the public that inquiries are ongoing and called for cooperation from citizens to ensure the suspects are brought to justice.
