The Minister for Security and Member of Parliament for Rujumbura Constituency, Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, has called on media experts and journalists to uphold the principles of truth and integrity, emphasizing that the ethics of journalism should never be compromised. His remarks were made on Saturday during the Kigezi Media Symposium held at Rukungiri Inn in Rukungiri Municipality, which brought together media personnel from across the Kigezi region.

Gen. Muhwezi expressed concern over the growing cases of misinformation and defamation by journalists, attributing these issues to a lack of professionalism among some practitioners who are not well-versed in journalistic ethics. He stressed that maintaining truth and integrity, even under pressure, is essential for quality journalism.

He further highlighted the severe consequences of compromising journalistic principles, which could damage both the journalist’s reputation and the credibility of their media house. He urged journalists to be passionate, professional, and patriotic in their work.

Dr. Judie Marvin Kateregga a president of the Association for Ugandans under the age 40 years(UB40)who facilitated the event, explained that as part of UB40, they are working to educate and encourage media practitioners to combat the pervasive politics of identity in the Kigezi region, which is hampering development. He noted that the campaign began in Kigezi but will eventually extend to all regions of Uganda, using journalists to sensitize communities and curb this harmful trend.

Dr. Kateregga emphasized the need for journalists to engage with the money economy and contribute to efforts to combat identity-based politics. He underscored the importance of journalists understanding the country’s history, as this knowledge will empower them to advocate for leaders who can advance generational causes and promote national progress.
