As Uganda marked the 39th NRA Liberation Day at Mubende National Teachers College, some Ugandans who played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle have continued to criticize the current NRM government, accusing it of deviating from its initial agenda.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, the former parish priest of Kitanga Parish in Kabale Diocese, discussed the significance of the Liberation Day celebrations. Fr. Batanyenda, who was instrumental in the creation of the 1995 Ugandan constitution, expressed disillusionment with how the NRM government has strayed from the original constitutional framework, questioning the leadership’s commitment.
According to Fr. Batanyenda, the 1995 constitution was a remarkable achievement, as it reflected the collective vision of great minds. However, he voiced concern over several constitutional amendments, particularly the controversial removal of the age limit, which he described as a betrayal of the original principles. He recalled President Yoweri Museveni’s previous warning to defend the constitution “in the bush” if it were ever tampered with.
In his remarks, Fr. Batanyenda also stressed the importance of self-reliance, urging Ugandans to work hard and pursue their personal aspirations, given the perceived indifference from political leaders. He highlighted the struggles faced by ordinary citizens, noting the widespread poverty, political imprisonment, and rampant unemployment across the country.
On the other hand, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in his speech during the Liberation Day celebrations, reassured the nation of the government’s commitment to poverty alleviation through programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga. He announced that the government would take responsibility for the transaction fees associated with PDM funds, ensuring that deductions would be waived for beneficiaries. The President emphasized that the PDM initiative is a key part of transforming Ugandans into a cash-based economy.
During the event, 61 individuals were awarded medals for their contributions to the development of the country. Among the recipients were Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja, business mogul Sudhir Ruparelia, and the Director/Managing Director of the Civil Aviation Authority
