Angello Twinomuhangi Bagorogoza, a former Rukungiri District LC5 chairperson aspirant, has been convicted by the Kabale Grade I Magistrate’s Court on two counts of theft and obtaining money by false pretence involving UGX 440 million.
Twinomuhangi, who previously served as a political aide to former Rubabo County Member of Parliament Mary Paula Turyahikayo Kebirungyi, was found guilty of stealing UGX 440,000,000 belonging to Mary Paula Turyahikayo Kebirungyi and her husband, Eng. Godfrey Rwihunga Turyahikayo. The money was reportedly intended for the purchase of family land.
According to the prosecution, led by Kabale Senior State Attorney Julie Nanjjura, the offences were committed between October 2020 and February 2021 at Centenary Bank, Kabale Branch. The court heard that the accused obtained the money under the pretext that it would be used to purchase land located at Rwakaraba, Plot 35, Block 18.
The judgment was delivered on Monday by Kabale Grade I Magistrate Aziza Nyevu, who convicted Twinomuhangi on both counts after finding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
During the court session, defense lawyer Solomon Atiba requested an adjournment of sentencing, stating that his client was sick and absent from court. He also informed the court that they had petitioned the High Court in Kabale seeking a review of the case, challenging its legality and citing concerns that details of the matter had already been made public.
However, Magistrate Nyevu dismissed the request, noting that court records indicated Twinomuhangi had last appeared in court in August last year and that it had previously been agreed that judgment would be delivered whether he was present or not.
“The last time we were here, we agreed that under whatever circumstances, whether your client is present or not, the judgment would be read,” Magistrate Nyevu ruled.
Following the conviction, the magistrate issued a warrant of arrest for Twinomuhangi and set March 10, 2026, as the date for sentencing.
Speaking after the ruling, Mary Paula Turyahikayo Kebirungyi said justice had finally been served after a long and challenging process. She expressed gratitude to the Kabale Senior State Attorney, Julie Nanjjura, for her dedication and tireless efforts in ensuring that justice was achieved.
